Need-based aid. Financial aid (scholar ships, grants, loans or work-study opportuni ties) given to students who have demonstrated financial need, calculated by subtracting the student's expected family contribution from
a college's total cost of attendance. The largest source of need-based aid is the federal govern ment, but colleges, states and private founda tions also award need-based aid to eligible students.
